10 Ways to Embrace Self-Love

Embracing self-love and body image acceptance is such a powerful journey, one I see firsthand as a boudoir photographer in Sanford, Florida. So many women share their struggles with self-love, and I’ve witnessed how boudoir photography can truly shift that perspective. It’s been incredibly rewarding for me and the women I work with to own our beauty and feel empowered in our own skin.

That’s why I love what I do!

If you’re on your own journey toward self-love, here are a few tips that have helped me along the way, and I hope they can inspire you too:

  1. Shift Your Focus to What Your Body Does, Not Just How It Looks:

Instead of focusing just on your appearance, celebrate your body for its functionality—how it moves, feels, and supports you. Recognize the small miracles it performs daily, from breathing to dancing to holding you upright!

2. Challenge Negative Self-Talk:

I get it! I know this is so hard because our minds can be brutal, and hey it’s just in our heads. When negative thoughts about your body arise, pause and reframe them. Instead of focusing on what you don’t like, try to focus on something positive about your body, even if it’s just a small detail. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a close friend. If you wouldn’t say something negative to someone you care about, don’t say it to yourself.

3. Practice Gratitude for Your Body:

Every day, try to take a moment to thank your body. This can be as simple as saying “thank you” to your legs for taking you on a walk or your arms for hugging loved ones.  Expressing gratitude has been a huge part of my own healing journey over the past 16 months, it’s helped me heal in so many ways!  

4. Limit External Comparisons:

Social media can be a real struggle when it comes to body image. Curate your feed to include body-positive accounts that celebrate all kinds of bodies. It can really help shift the narrative and counteract those unrealistic beauty standards we often see. 

5. Find Clothing That Makes You Feel Empowered:

Wear clothes that you love and what makes you feel good, not just what’s trendy. When you find clothes that fit your body and make you feel confident, it can really boost how you see yourself.

6. Engage in Activities That Feel Good, Not Just Look Good:

Exercise or movement should be about feeling good, not just changing how you look. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, hiking, or swimming, choose what makes you feel strong and alive. The goal is to love the way your body feels when you move, not just how it changes.

7. Surround Yourself with Supportive People:

Spend time with people who lift you up, who embrace you for exactly who you are. Positive, loving relationships have such a big impact and deeply influnece on how we view ourselves.

8. Celebrate Small Wins and Progress:

Self-love is a journey, and it’s important to celebrate every little step! Whether it’s standing in front of the mirror with kindness, choosing healthy habits, or simply feeling comfortable in your skin, each moment is worth recognizing and celebrating!

9. Affirmations + Mirror Work:

Stand in front of the mirror and speak positive affirmations to yourself. Start with something simple like “I am worthy” or “My body is beautiful just as it is.” The more you do this, the easier it becomes to rewire those negative thoughts over time.

10. Honor Your Unique Journey + Be Patient with Yourself:

Every person’s body has its own story. Embrace yours! Knowing that your body is a reflection of your experiences, resilience, and growth. Body image isn’t something that shifts overnight. Be patient with your progress and allow yourself time to heal and grow into the love you deserve.
